Stevenson man sentenced following guilty plea in father’s murder

JACKSON COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — A Stevenson man charged with his father’s 2023 shooting death pleaded guilty and was sentenced in February, court documents show.

Jacob Tyler Thompson, 27, was arrested and charged with murder after authorities say he shot his father and fled the scene on foot in Jan. 2023.

Court records show he entered a guilty plea on Feb. 1 and was sentenced to 35 years in the Alabama Department of Corrections (ADOC). Thompson received 388 days of jail credit, making his minimum release date January 8, 2058.

According to a spokesperson with the JCSO, they responded with Stevenson Police and the Hollywood Police Department to a fatal shooting on County Road 147 in Stevenson at about 6:37 p.m. on January 9, 2023.

When they arrived at the scene, investigators found 54-year-old Jack Edward Thompson, of Stevenson, dead on the front porch of the home.

Upon investigation, officers developed his son, Jacob Thompson, as a suspect. He was arrested the following night, January 10, 2023, and taken to the Jackson County Jail.

Jacob Thompson originally pleaded not guilty – and not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect in late March 2023, according to court documents.
