Steven Soderbergh shot new thriller 'Unsane' on an iPhone, and here's a creepy exclusive scene

As evidenced by its debut trailer, Unsane will be yet another experimental effort from Steven Soderbergh (Traffic, Ocean’s Eleven), given that the director — following in the boundary-pushing footsteps of Sean Baker’s Tangerine — shot the entire film with an iPhone. That alone should make it a must-see release when it arrives in theaters later this month. However, as our exclusive clip from the thriller reveals, there’s more to it than just its formal conceit.

In Unsane, Claire Foy (The Crown) plays a woman who believes she’s being stalked by a former boyfriend. When she goes looking for help, however, she winds up in a psychiatric hospital, where she’s sure she doesn’t belong — and where she continues to see her stalker around every corner. It’s a psychological head trip of a severely disorienting order, and that’s definitely apparent from the above scene, in which Foy’s Sawyer while lying in bed at night, is harassed by Juno Temple’s braided-hair inmate Violet. Foy’s protagonist asserts that she’s far different than Temple’s disturbed patient, but Violet seems far less convinced that Sawyer is a well-adjusted victim of (unusual) circumstance — and lets it be known that she’s also more than eager to indulge in some violence.

Co-starring Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Aimee Mullins, and Amy Irving, Unsane only gets progressively crazier after this clip. No doubt those looking for a suspenseful — and formally inventive — mind game will take to Soderbergh’s latest.

Unsane arrives in theaters on March 23.
