Steuben County overdose reports remain consistent in March

STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. (WETM) — Steuben County saw the same number of reported overdoses in March as in February, but overdoses are down compared to last year.

According to the Steuben County Public Health Department, there were 19 overdoses reported in the county in March. Narcan was administered for six of the overdoses, and four of the overdoses were suspected to have been caused by opioids. Steuben County continues to see no overdose-related fatalities this year.

There were also 19 reported overdoses in February. Although overdoses haven’t decreased from month to month in 2024, reports have decreased compared to 2023. According to Public Health Director Darlene Smith, the first three months of 2024 had 33% fewer overdoses than the first three months of 2023.

“Public Health and its partners stay committed to providing support to those in need,” said Smith. “Free Narcan training is always available through our office, and we urge everyone to tap into this great resource.”

Online Narcan training can be found on Steuben County’s website, and in-person Narcan training can be scheduled by contacting the Steuben Prevention Coalition’s Opioid Committee or by calling Steuben Public Health at 607-664-2438. Steuben County also mails free Narcan kits to residents upon request.
