Stepping into the medical field on Match Day

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — It is an important day for medical students across the nation and here at home. It is match day for medical students, they learn where they will continue their education and residency.

In our area, Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine in Scranton fourth-year students received some life-changing news.

Hundreds of students and their families gathered at Riverfront Sports Complex in Scranton for their big day.

It is Match Day. The day fourth-year medical students find out where they will be assigned for their residency for the next four years.

Wellsboro native, Evan Bair, says it is his dream to come back and serve the community that he says helped him get to where he is today. his residency match is at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut.

The vice dean of health equity and inclusion at Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine says it’s rewarding to see students they mentored from a young age now taking that next step to becoming doctors.

Many of the students credit the Reach High program for their decision to go into medicine.

It’s a day filled with so many emotions but one person 28/22 News spoke with says they could not be happier for what the future holds.

Cara Anzulewicz is also a couple match. they were assigned to atlanticare regional medical center in Atlantic City, New Jersey with her partner to practice psychiatry.

Bair offers this advice to future medical students.

A total of one hundred fifteen students got their matches Friday afternoon.
