Trump pick for Fed withdraws hours after saying he's 'all in'

President Trump announced Thursday that Stephen Moore, one of two controversial picks for the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, would no longer seek an appointment.

Hours earlier, Moore, whose viability as a pick for the Federal Reserve board had been questioned due to his views on women as well as his expertise on the economy, told Bloomberg News that he was “all in” for the position and that he had Trump’s support.

“My biggest ally is the president,” Moore said. “He’s full speed ahead.”

In a letter to the president released following Trump’s tweet, Moore praised the president’s economic policies and thanked him for suggesting him for the Fed board.

“Your confidence in me makes what I am about to say much harder,” Moore wrote. “I am respectfully asking that you withdraw my name from consideration. The unrelenting attacks on my character have become untenable for me and my family and 3 more months of this would be too hard on us.”

Moore becomes Trump’s second prospective nominee to the Federal Reserve board in as many weeks to withdraw from consideration. On April 22, Trump posted another tweet informing the public that former Godfather’s Pizza CEO Herman Cain had dropped out of the running for the position. Cain had received scrutiny over past sexual misconduct allegations by multiple women that had torpedoed his 2012 presidential campaign.

Moore attempted to portray his past inflammatory writings on women as parody, but Republican senators began distancing themselves from his possible nomination to the Federal Reserve board in recent weeks.
