Stephen King's Pet Sematary remake has cast the Oscar-nominated John Lithgow in the role of Jud Crandall

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star Jason Clarke has already been landed as the lead character Louis Creed, a dad who moves his family into a rural home next to Jud's, reports Entertainment Weekly.

Lithgow, 72, will surely have a whale of a time playing Jud, who enlightens the Creeds about an eerie 'Pet Sematary', which becomes the burial place of their pet cat after it is killed by a truck.

At the moment, it's unclear just how true this remake will be to the original film, or in fact King's novel, but if Lithgow portrays Jud anywhere near as creepy as he was written, horror fans could be treated to a memorable performance from the Crown actor.

In the 1989 adaptation of King's novel, Jud Crandall was portrayed by the late Fred Gwynne.

This remake will be one of the many new Stephen King adaptations, with the reboot of clown horror IT and fantasy western The Dark Tower having already been released last year.
