Stephen Colbert stages a 'presidential intervention' for Trump

Stephen Colbert has held a "presidential intervention" after the week's hootenanny of events featuring Donald Trump and Russian president Vladimir Putin.

After brutally roasting Trump’s 'double negative' defense on Wednesday after that press conference, Colbert spent Thursday's opening monologue on Trump's invitation to Putin to visit the White House in the fall for another summit.

Fed up, the Late Show host staged a little intervention for the president, beginning with Trump's questioning of the United States' commitment to defending all NATO allies.

"Mr. President, thank you for being here. I've written my thoughts down because this is so emotional," he began. "Sir, you're here, because we love our country very much and you... are in it."

"We need you to hear some things. When you attack NATO I feel like I'm being attacked. And your friend Vladimir, he's not really your friend, okay? You're doing what he wants because you think it's fun but what you don't realise is if you ever step out of line he's going to show the world you're a big dirty clown who loves the pee-pee."

Colbert finished the short "intervention" with a humdinger of a proposition.

"So instead of sucking up to dictators, we want you to find a safer hobby, like volcano parkour. Or shark dentistry. Or heroin."
