(WGHP) — If the presidential were held today, North Carolina would go to former President Donald Trump, according to a new poll.

Emerson College Polling and The Hill polled 1,000 North Carolinians who are registered to vote, including 366 Republicans, 338 Democrats and 296 registered as independents or with another party.

Of those, 45.3% said they voted for Trump in 2020 and 44.3% said they voted for Biden. 3.3% said they voted for someone else, and 7.1% did not vote.

New poll shows Trump ahead of Biden in seven key swing states

In the last four years, however, opinions appear to have shifted and not in Biden’s favor. In terms of approval, Biden sits at 36.6% approval with North Carolinians and 53.3% disapproval. 10.1% were either neutral or had no opinion.

The poll found that 10.84% of those who voted for Biden were no longer sure who they would vote for this year, and 4.06% said they would vote for Trump. The former president is also at risk of losing some of his 2020 voters with 3.09% saying they are undecided and 2.87% saying they would vote for Biden. Comparatively, however, Biden has taken the heavier toll.

When asked which candidate they would vote for if the election were held today, the numbers skewed towards Trump.

In a hypothetical 2024 presidential match-up between Democrat Pres. Joe Biden, Republican former Pres. Donald Trump, independents Robert Kennedy and Cornel West, and the Green Party’s Jill Stein, 46.3% said they would vote for Trump.

Biden followed with 37.2%, and Kennedy received 5.6%. Both West and Stein received 1.2%. The poll found that 8.6% of respondents were undecided.

Without third-party candidates, Biden gained bumped up to 42.2%, but he still fell short of Trump’s 47.4%. The remaining 10.4% were undecided.

Governor

While Biden’s disapproval outweighs his approval, the opposite is true of Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper. Cooper had 41.4% approval and 38.2% disapproval. 20.4% were either neutral or had no opinion.

This year, however, Cooper will be stepping down as he hits his term limit. Now, two members of the Council of State will run to claim the state’s highest office.

So far, the race is extremely close. If the election were held today, Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson led Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein by only four respondents. Robinson had 41.8% and Stein had 41.4% The poll found 4.9% said they would vote for someone else and 11.9% said they were undecided.

That means the decision of North Carolina’s undecided voters could be the nudge either candidate needs to claim victory.
