Steelers sign former Notre Dame edge defender Jamir Jones

Apr. 7—The Pittsburgh Steelers signed former Notre Dame edge defender Jamir Jones on Wednesday. Jones, whose older brother Jarron is also on the Steelers' offseason roster, likely will be an outside linebacker for the team.

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Jamir Jones, like his brother, played at Notre Dame. Undrafted last year, Jamir Jones signed and spent training camp with the Houston Texans.

In 55 games over his career with the Fighting Irish, Jones had 50 tackles — 7 1/2 for a loss, 4 1/2 sacks — two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.

Jarron Jones was a defensive lineman at Notre Dame but moved to the offensive line during a stint in the XFL last year and remained on the Steelers' 2020 practice squad at that position.

The Steelers lack proven depth behind their projected starters at outside linebacker next year, All Pro T.J. Watt and second-year Alex Highsmith.
