Steelers rank high in PFF Quarterbacks Ranking

With the days numbered before any football action begins, we find ourselves in the NFL’s ranking season.

Pro Football Focus has been busy all summer long ranking everything from top-performers in the league to best position groups.

According to PFF, the Pittsburgh Steelers are ranked at No. 3 in the league for best quarterback situation. I must admit I thought that it would be lower.

My initial thought would have been in the top-10 and maybe somewhere around number seven or so. I know Roethlisberger has been playing his best football the last couple years and has always had a unimaginable way of avoiding sacks. But I also know that Roethlisberger is usually on the outside looking in when it comes to rankings.

Additionally, outside of Roethlisberger, the Steelers have Landry Jones and Bruce Gradkowski as the No. 2 and No. 3 quarterbacks respectively. Many people will argue that both quarterbacks are not capable of getting the Steelers a win if needed. Sadly, PFF is not really that far off my initial thought but still ranked the Steelers high anyway.

From PFF:

“Ben Roethlisberger is another quarterback playing the best football of his career, despite beginning to get up there in years. He is now 34 years old, but completed 68.0 percent of his passes in 2015 and formed a nearly-unstoppable combination with WR Antonio Brown. Roethlisberger has developed into a quarterback capable of making all types of throws, but may not be quite as durable and capable of taking the hits he invites by extending plays as he was during his younger years. If he gets forced to miss time, the Steelers are not in nearly as good shape, with Landry Jones proven to be a major drop-off, and about the only thing that can slow down Brown’s dominance.”

PFF has Jones as the number two, but I think that is still up in the air. When called upon last season, Jones completed 32-of-55 passes for 513 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions in seven games of action.

At times, Jones look great, but he mostly looked like a third string quarterback. GradkowskI I feel might be the better option as the backup. He reminds me a lot of former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch.

Batch was a solid backup that was a student of the game. Why he’s not coaching is a mystery to me, but he really knew the offense and schemes really well. I get the same feeling with Gradkoswki as I did with Batch, but not to as the same extent. Gradkowski still has work to do, but so does Jones.

There’s a lot that could be said about either Gradkowski or Jones as the backup, but either way—they are backups for a reason. Roethlisberger probably 80 percent of the Steelers ranking as high as they did and that’s okay.
