‘Steel house’ in Texas that looks like a UFO on the market for $1.7M. Take a look

A haunting steel house that stands on four legs on a ridge near Lubbock, Texas has hit the real estate market for $1.7 million. The Bruno Steel House has a unique history to go with its unusual design — a history that carries a tinge of sadness.

The home was created by sculptor Robert Bruno who turned working on the home into his passion, The Dallas Morning News reported. He passed away in 2008 from colon cancer before he was able to complete his life’s work.

“As meticulous as he was capricious, Bruno had built the house with virtually no assistance over the course of some 30 years, designing and modifying it as he went, frequently tearing out portions that no longer pleased him,” the Dallas Morning News said.

The three-bedroom, 2.5-bathroom, 2,200 square-foot home is made of 150 tons of blackened steel with an interior that resembles “the inside of a tree trunk,” Atlas Obscura describes. The unfinished sections are easy to point out, with “gaping holes” between the house’s levels. Atlas Obscura also notes that Bruno wished to install a pool and aquarium, but died before he was able to do so.

There are many videos of the artistically stunning home online, including this Visit Lubbock Facebook video which is almost 14 minutes long that has over 250 comments since it posted in 2017.

“I grew up watching Bruno build this,” one commenter said. “My parents live a few houses down from it!”

My brother lives about a block away from this house,” another said. “Been there many times when it was under construction never seen inside the finished product.”

“Took tour with the builder and designed before it was finished,” another said. “It was not expected that anyone would live in it. The professor used it for design and support projects for his students at Tech.”
