State trooper injured by impaired driver: OSHP

FREMONT, Ohio (WJW) — An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper was injured when a suspected impaired driver struck the trooper’s cruiser on the Ohio Turnpike late Monday.

It happened just before midnight on Monday, May 20, west of the state Route 53 interchange in Rice Township, Sandusky County, according to a news release.

Investigators said a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Curtis A. Rogers Jr., 33, of Huron, was headed west when it went off the left side of the roadway and hit the trooper’s Dodge Charger patrol car while it was parked in the crossover between the westbound and eastbound lanes.

The trooper suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Rogers was not injured.

Troopers found Rogers to be impaired, according to the release. He’s been charged with a felony count of aggravated vehicular assault and a misdemeanor count of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, according to the release. He was jailed in Sandusky County.

The crash remains under investigation.
