State transportation department to replace traffic signs in northwest Lower Michigan
KALKASKA, Mich. - The state Department of Transportation plans to replace a number of traffic signs in northwest Lower Michigan.
MDOT says the signs are on M-72 in Kalkaska, Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties, and on M-115 in Benzie County.
According to state transportation officials, the switch-out is being done to make sure the signs meet federal standards.
The project is scheduled to begin later this month and be done by early May.
MDOT says motorists will encounter shoulder closures, or lane closures in areas without shoulders, and should see no significant delays.
The signs are located along about 72 miles of state highway. They'll include new retro-reflective materials that make the sign brighter and more readable at night, as well as sign posts designed to break away if struck by a vehicle.
