State Police welcomes 9 new troopers from latest graduating class

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois State Police officially welcomed a new class of State Troopers on Friday with their graduation from the Illinois State Police Academy.

The nine troopers of Cadet Class 146 recently completed a 28-week training program that included physical and classroom instruction on topics like domestic violence, critical incident response, de-escalation, firearms, control and arrest tactics and more.

“Today is another proud day for ISP as we welcome new troopers to our ranks,” said ISP Director Brendan Kelly. “One of the many special moments for an ISP Director includes administering the Oath of an Officer to new troopers. The expression of great pride on their faces, the inherent desire to make a difference in their communities, and the determination and grit they exude is a demonstration of ISP’s strong heritage.”

Cadet Class 146 the 18th class to graduate under Kelly’s leadership. It’s also the 18th class for Governor J.B. Pritzker.

“On behalf of the State of Illinois, I would like to congratulate Cadet Class 146 on their graduation from the Illinois State Police Academy,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “My administration has prioritized recruitment over the last five years, leading to 512 new troopers — and I am honored to welcome these nine cadets as they start the next chapter of their career in law enforcement.”

Most of the troopers will be assigned to Troops 3 and 4 in Chicago and Peoria, but one will be assigned to Troop 7, which is based out of Pesotum.

The new troopers’ training is not over yet, however. They will be required to take part in a 14-week field training program with one-on-one mentoring with Field Training Officers. Troopers who successfully complete this program will advance to patrolling solo.
