State police trooper among two people hospitalized after cruiser struck in construction zone on I-91

A state police trooper and one other person were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after being involved in a crash on Interstate 91 in Wethersfield early Tuesday.

The trooper was in a construction zone in a parked cruiser on I-91 North in the area of Exit 25-26 when the right, rear quarter panel of the vehicle was struck by a passing motorist, according to Connecticut State Police.

State police said the trooper was parked in the left lane of three while state Department of Transportation crews were doing work in the left lane. The cruiser had its emergency lights on at the time of the crash.

A 25-year-old Hartford man was driving a 2014 Chevy Malibu north in the left lane when he struck the rear of the cruiser, according to state police.

State police initially said the 31-year-old trooper was not injured before clarifying that both the trooper and the Chevy driver suffered minor injuries. They were both taken to Hartford Hospital, state police said.

The Chevy driver was issued an infraction for following too closely resulting in an accident and failure to obey the signal of an officer, according to state police.
