State official to speak at Georgia Southwestern commencement

AMERICUS — Georgia Southwestern State University will hold its spring 2024 Commencement ceremony on May 10 at 11 a.m. in the Convocation Hall of the Student Success Center, also known as the Storm Dome. Approximately 300 students are graduating with a bachelor’s, master’s or specialist degree.

State Rep. Patty Stinson will serve as the ceremony’s commencement speaker. A native of Butler, Stinson has dedicated her life to public service and community engagement. After completing her education at the Georgia Institute of Technology, she began her career in public service, serving on the Taylor County Board of Elections before being elected as the State Representative for House District 139 in 2013.

Stinson has represented her constituents and advocated for issues ranging from agriculture to health care. She serves on numerous committees, including the House Agriculture Committee and the Ways and Means Committee. Beyond her political duties, Stinson is an independent entrepreneur, owning and operating Jefferson-Stinson Mortuary in her hometown. She also serves as interim executive director of the West Central Georgia Community Action Council.

Her passion for her community and unwavering commitment to service have earned her respect and admiration from both constituents and peers alike.

Doors to the Convocation Hall open one hour prior to the ceremony and will close five minutes before the ceremony. Guests should arrive early and plan accordingly for parking and finding seats. Accessible parking and seating will be available. An overflow room also will be available with the event livestreamed. The ceremony will be live-streamed on GSW’s YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/GeorgiaSouthwestern.
