State leader in discus chasing all-time record

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5) — Elizabeth Driscoll has thrown the discus farther than any other high school girl in the state this year.

What makes the Canyon Crest Academy senior’s mark even more special:

“I hadn’t played any team sports before high school,” Elizabeth said.

The Solana Beach native started throwing as a sophomore and has reached a personal best: 155 feet, 5 inches.

“I walked up to the stand and the coach there said, ‘welcome to the best ring in San Diego, you’re going to throw 150 today.’ I was like sure, and when I did it, it was surreal,” Elizabeth said.

She also posted the 6th best mark for girls, in San Diego section history.

“That’s pretty cool. I mean, I knew it was a good throw and i know San Diego has a lot of amazing athletes, so i didn’t know it ranked that high,” says Driscoll.

2023 World Champion and Mount Miguel alum Lalauga Tausaga, currently holds the San Diego section record for discuss at 167-3.

Elizabeth has her eyes on that prize.

“It’s a possibility. Since it’s so early in the season I think I have another 12 feet in me,” Elizabeth said.

The future Duke blue devil hopes to throw her way to the top spot in San Diego history while pursuing a childhood dream.

“I’ve wanted to go the Olympics since I was 5 years old. At first it was sprinting, and then I was like no. Not even discus, in college I will throw hammer. I think I can be successful in that,” Elizabeth said.

The 17-year-old seems like a shoe in for state in discus, but she could also qualify in another event.

“Shotput is a love hate relationship, it still is. I don’t know how I’d feel about it because I still don’t like shotput that much. I definitely want twin state in discus but to even go in shotput would be really cool,” Elizabeth said.
