State College plasma donation center to soon close its doors. Here’s what to know

BioLife Plasma Services plans to close its downtown State College location in May, with plans for a nine-story condominium hotel at the site take shape.

According to a BioLife spokesperson, the owner has decided to not renew BioLife’s lease and instead is moving forward with selling the property at 321 W. Beaver Ave.

“We understand the prospective new owner is considering an entirely new condominium real estate concept for the space. Unfortunately, the last day for plasma donors to donate plasma is May 31, 2024,” the spokesperson wrote in an email.

Earlier this year, plans were submitted for a proposed mixed-use building with commercial space and a 72-unit condominium hotel at the site. Plans showed the BioLife Plasma Services building would be demolished, with a new building constructed in its place.

The BioLife spokesperson wrote in an email that there are no immediate plans to open another location in State College. The spokesperson did not immediately respond to a question about the number of employees affected.

BioLife is not the only place in State College to donate plasma — CSL Plasma is located in the Northland Shopping Center.

Once the State College Biolife closes, the next-closest location would be in Pittsburgh, with the company planning to open another Pennsylvania Biolife in Camp Hill early next year.
