Drug Court Program to mark 25th year Thursday

CANTON – The Stark County Drug Court (Chance) Program will celebrate its 25th year at its graduation ceremony at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Stark County Courthouse, 115 Central Plaza N. The public is invited.

The Chance Program provides drug and alcohol treatment to nonviolent felony offenders who have committed drug-related or drug-driven offenses. It is a minimum 12-month program where successful completion results in sealing and dismissal of the charges.

Common Pleas Court Judge Kristen G. Farmer presides over the program. Since 1998, about 775 people have graduated and the program has maintained a three-year felony recidivism rate of 1%.

Free seed packets available

CANTON – StarkFresh a Canton-based nonprofit, is providing free vegetable, fruit and flower seed packets to the community for the 10th year.

This year, 10 locations in Canton, Alliance, Massillon, Canal Fulton, Louisville, North Canton and Minerva, including six local public libraries, will distribute more than 200,000 seed packets. Seeds are available until all packets have been given away.

Music of Fleetwood Mac on Saturday

CANTON − Jeans ‘N Classics returns to Umstattd Hall, 2331 17th St. NW for "Rumours: The Music of Fleetwood Mac" at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $30, $45 and $55. Veterans, first responders, health care workers and educators, as well as SNAP and Medicaid recipients, get a 20% discount.

Soup at Six program to celebrate Women’s History Month

CANTON − Kim Kenney, executive director at the McKinley Presidential Library & Museum, 800 McKinley Monument Drive NW, will present the program “Women at Work” at 6 p.m. March 14 at the museum. This program to celebrate Women’s History Month explores the jobs and careers that women have held, including profiles of pioneering women in the community.

The cost is $25 per person and includes soup, bread, dessert, a beverage and the program. Pre-paid reservations are required; call 330-455-7043 or visit the events tab on the museum’s website at www.McKinleyMuseum.org. The reservation deadline is Thursday.

Ballet at the Palace on Friday

CANTON − Grand Kyiv Ballet will present “Giselle” at 7 p.m. Friday at the Palace Theatre, 605 Market Ave. N.

CANTON − The National Alliance on Mental Illness Stark County hosts a peer support group at 7 p.m. Tuesdays at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 2551 55th St. NE, Plain Township.

NAMI Stark County also holds an online peer support group at 7 p.m. Fridays on Zoom (https://zoom.us/j/386459766; Meeting ID: 386 459 766) and a Family Support Group at 7 p.m. on the first and third Sundays of the month on Zoom (https://zoom.us/j/798097665; Meeting ID: 798 097 665).

Music history lecture Thursday

CANTON − Music History with MJ returns at 6 p.m. Thursday at Zimmermann Symphony Center, 2331 17th St. NW (inside McKinley High School).

M.J. Albacete will present “Theme & Variations” with jazz, American folk songs, and other historic examples by Juan Cabanilles, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Elgar and others.

Lake Cable Woman’s Club craft show March 10

JACKSON TWP. − Lake Cable Woman’s Club 43rd semiannual craft show will be 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 10 at 5725 Fulton Drive NW.

Admission is free. There will be handmade craft items and raffle baskets, and homemade soups, sloppy Joes and chicken salad croissants. Boy Scout Troop 927 will have a flag disposal box available.

Learn about Social Security

LAKE TWP. − The Stark County District Library's Lake Community Branch, 565 Market Ave. SW, will host Planning for Retirement from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Public affairs specialist Robert Fenn with the Social Security Administration will explain when to start thinking about Social Security and how to know when you're eligible for benefits. The program will end with a question-and-answer session.

International Dinner and Cultural Festival is March 23

NORTH CANTON − Walsh University’s International Dinner and Cultural Festival will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. March 23 in the Auxiliary Gym in the Cecchini Family Health & Wellness Complex, 2020 E. Maple St.

Doors open at 4:30 p.m., the program begins at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served by 5:30 p.m.

Entries being accepted for Little Art Gallery’s annual May Show

NORTH CANTON – The Little Art Gallery of the North Canton Public Library is accepting entries of all media until March 31 for the 81st annual May Show from any artist living or working in Stark County who is at least 16.

All works submitted must be original, recent (within the past three years) and not previously exhibited in a Little Art Gallery show.

The show opens April 29 and will be on display in the gallery through June 29. The Friends of the Little Art Gallery (FLAG) will sponsor awards for best in show, second place, third place and people’s choice.

Artists selected for the show will be notified April 14. Accepted work may be delivered from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 15 and from 5 to 7 p.m. April 16. The opening reception is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 28.

Paper entry forms are available in the gallery or may be printed from the library’s website at ncantonlibrary.org. The 2024 entry fee is $15 per piece submitted, with a limit of four submissions per artist. Images of artwork must be submitted by digital photography in jpeg format for the jurying process. Diaper drive is Saturday

PLAIN TWP. − The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Greater Canton will host a diaper drive for Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Donations of clean, unused diapers in all sizes will be accepted at 2585 Easton St. NE. Sizes 4, 5, 6, 7 and pullups are most needed. Volunteers will greet donors at the front of the church.

The Diaper Drive will support Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank, a nonprofit organization to help low-income families in Stark County and surrounding counties secure an adequate monthly supply of fresh diapers for their children.
