Bark & Brew fundraiser June 8

ALLIANCE – The Bark & Brew 5K Fun Run, a fundraising event for Michigan-based Leader Dogs for the Blind, will begin at 9 a.m. June 8 at Aeonian Brewing Co., 120 W. Chestnut St.

Leader Dogs for the Blind is a nonprofit that provides guide dogs to people who are blind and visually impaired.

The community event, hosted by Coastal Pet Products, features a 5K fun run/walk on Stark Parks Iron Horse Trail that starts and ends at Aeonian Brewing, a DJ, raffle baskets and corn hole. For more information, visit www.coastalpet.com/bark-brew/.

Summer Reading Program starts Tuesday

ALLIANCE – Rodman Public Library's Summer Reading Program will run from Tuesday through July 27. It will feature three divisions: one for children (up to 12 years old), one for teens (ages 12 to 18) and one for adults (18 and older).

Patrons can sign up in person at the Main Library, the Branch Library, or on the Bookmobile. Patrons may also sign up online at rodmanlibrary.beanstack.org, or through the Beanstack app, which they can download on a mobile device. Prizes will be awarded throughout the two months, and patrons will earn entries into grand prize drawings held after the summer reading program ends.

A kickoff event will be held at the Main Library from 3 to 5 p.m. June 5 that will feature a petting zoo, face painting and a few carnival games.

A kickoff event also will be held June 7 at the Branch Library, 1808 West State St., in the Marketplace Plaza. The event will feature a world travel theme with face painting, a book character scavenger hunt throughout the plaza, light refreshments, a compass necklace craft, and several games, including large Connect 4, pyramid building with cups, picking up marshmallows with chopsticks, and a leapfrog carnival game.

Brewster Firemans Festival this week

BREWSTER – The Brewster Firemans Festival will be Wednesday through Sunday at Bimler Park with rides, fair food vendors and live music. Midway with unlimited ride wristbands are $25 daily. For more information, call 330-767-4212. The entertainment schedule is as follows:

  • Wednesday – band New Delhi Monkey Men at 8 p.m.

  • Thursday – parade at 7 p.m., band Alter Nation at 8 p.m.

  • Friday – 5k race at 7:30 p.m., band Random Strangers at 8 p.m., fireworks at 10 p.m.

  • Saturday – car show at 5 p.m., band Alan Carl at 8 p.m.

Bluegrass music, magic show at library

  • Music Jam Session, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. June 3: Musicians are invited to join in a jam session at the library. Bring your acoustic instruments for an afternoon of bluegrass music. All skill levels are welcome.

  • Elie Magic, 6 p.m. June 4: Cleveland-based magician Elie Haoui will perform tricks and illusions. This event is open to all ages, but some tricks may be best enjoyed by those who are 10 and older. Registration is required.

Downtown streets to close next two Saturdays

CANTON – Third Street NW from McKinley Avenue NW to Dewalt Avenue NW will be closed between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday for an event at the YMCA, according to the Canton Police Department.

From 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. June 8, the following streets will be closed for an event downtown:

  • Market Avenue N from Second to Fifth streets

  • Court Avenue from Second to Fifth streets NW

  • Dewalt from Third to Fourth streets NW

  • Fourth Street from Market Avenue to McKinley Avenue NW (Cleveland will be open)

  • Third Street from Cleveland Avenue to Market Avenue N

  • From 12:30 to 2 p.m., expect closures for a walk between 11th and Third streets on Market Avenue N. The time frame will vary based on walkers.

East Canton sets spring cleanup

EAST CANTON – The village will hold a free spring cleanup June 8.

Trash should be bagged, bundled or boxed and set at curbside by 6 a.m. Furniture and appliances will be accepted. Brush must be cut and bundled in four-foot lengths and weigh less than 50 pounds; brush that is not bundled will not be taken. For more information, visit https://tinyurl.com/5cukp4fd.

Domestic Violence Project fundraiser gala June 7

JACKSON TWP. – Domestic Violence Project Inc. will host its annual “Champions of Hope” gala June 7 at Brookside Country Club 1800 Canton Ave. NW.

The event starts at 5:30 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m.

Along with shelters in Canton and Massillon, the nonprofit provides transitional housing, legal advocacy, medical advocacy, and outreach services to domestic violence survivors. All services are free, confidential and available 24/7.

The Champions of Hope gala will include a live and silent auction featuring items and experiences in all price ranges. Golf fundraiser June 22

LAKE TWP. – The Lake Township FISH golf classic fundraiser will be 1 to 8 p.m. June 22 at Paradise Lake Country Club, 1900 Randolph Road, Mogadore.

The shotgun start will be at 2 p.m. Golfers will get a sandwich at the turn and dinner at the awards presentation after the round.

Concert at Lions Lincoln Theatre

MASSILLON – Blue Macaroon Theater Co. and Castle on a Cloud Entertainment will present Royal Melodies: A Summer Princess Concert from 2 to 4 p.m. June 2 at Lions Lincoln Theatre, 156 Lincoln Way E.

Library hosts summer reading kickoff party Saturday

NORTH CANTON – The North Canton Public Library, 185 N. Main St., will kick off its Epic Summer with a party from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Register for Summer Reading programs for all ages. Akron Zoomobile presentations will be at 11 a.m. and noon. Attendees can enjoy free ice cream, watch hands-on demonstrations from COSI on Wheels and get information about the library’s summer activities.

GiGi's Playhouse fundraiser is Saturday

PERRY TWP. – GiGi's Playhouse: Down Syndrome Achievement Centers will hold a Dash for Down Syndrome fundraiser from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Sippo Reservoir Park.

Proceeds from this competitive 5k, one-mile family-friendly walk, run or dash event to commemorate Gigi’s Playhouse’s fifth anniversary will benefit the organization's free programs and services for people with Down syndrome and their families in the Canton community. The event will feature music, prizes and activities for participants of all ages and abilities.

Nature Fest & Foto Fest next weekend

SUGAR CREEK TWP. – The Wilderness Center, 9877 Alabama Ave. SW, will host Nature Fest & Foto Fest from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2. Admission is free. The event will be held rain or shine.

Numerous local makers of nature-inspired items will sell their wares on site. The event will include family-friendly activities led by The Wilderness Center’s education team and speakers on topics related to art and nature. The Wilderness Center Photo Club will display hundreds of photographs, and guests can vote for their favorites.

Food will be available for purchase. High Country Bluegrass will provide live music Saturday.
