A stark age gap has been revealed between Tory and Labour voters, with nearly five times as many older people backing Boris Johnson's party, a YouGov poll has shown.

The new data showed that the older the voter, the more they were inclined to cast their ballots in favour of the Tories.

Only 21 per cent of people between the ages of 18 to 24 voted for the winning party, compared to 67 per cent of those aged over 70/

Oppositely, 56 per cent of those aged younger than 24 voted for Labour, compared to 14 per cent of those in the older age bracket.

The percentage of those who supported smaller parties, including the Liberal Democrats, the Greens and the Brexit Party, was more or less consistent across the age groups.

Boris Johnson's Conservative Party stormed to victory on December 12, winning the general election with a landslide majority of 80 seats after his promise to "Get Brexit Done".

Meanwhile, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been widely criticised over the party’s worst election result since the 1930s.

Labour’s “red wall” of seats in the North, the Midlands and North Wales crumbled in the face of the Conservative onslaught with many commentators blaming Mr Corbyn's failure to take a clear position on Brexit.

YouGov also released new data comparing how the electorate voted at the 2019 election compared to their EU referendum vote in 2016.

It showed that the majority of Leave voters cast their ballot in favour of Mr Johnson's Tories.

Out of those who voted for Brexit, 74 per cent favoured the Conservatives on December 12 while 14 per cent of Leavers voted for Labour.

Among those who voted Remain, 49 per cent voted for Labour, 19 per cent for the Tories, and 21 per cent for the Lib Dems.
