SINGAPORE — If you're a Starhub mobile user who likes to game or watch videos on your phone, there's some good new for you.

Mobile network analyst company OpenSignal latest report, the Global Mobile Network Experience Awards 2024, revealed that the Singapore telco is the best network for gaming and watching videos on your phone.

In fact, StarHub's 84.4 score was good enough for a three-way tie with South Korean's SK telecom and LG U+ in the Group II category. The Group II category is OpenSignal's latest attempt to define telco's mobile network performance.

That's because there's a difference between networks who cater to bigger territories with rural areas, and those who operate in denser cities. Local telcos StarHub, M1, and SingTel were included in Group II, which are for networks in smaller urban areas.

"Unlike Opensignal’s 5G Global Awards, this report looks at the overall mobile experience of our users across all mobile network technologies. While 5G has become an increasingly important driver, it still does not fully dictate users’ overall experience," the report stated.

"In markets where operators have launched 5G services, both the overall experiential scores — Video Experience, Games Experience and Voice App Experience — and the speed awards are heavily influenced by the boost that 5G gives to users’ experience over older 3G and 4G technologies," OpenSignal said.

How did the other Singapore telcos fare?

While StarHub is the winner for the Games Experience category, rival SingTel isn't far behind, in the 2nd to 5th place, according the report.

As for the other categories in the report, StarHub was in the 2nd to 5th place for both the Voice App Experience and Download Speed Experience categories.

And if you're wondering, the biggest winner seems to be South Korea's SK Telecom, which was first for Games Experience, Download and Upload Speed experience.

Lastly, M1 was also rated in the best improved year-on-year for download speeds, with an increase of 41.6 per cent over last year. However, other telcos, such as Costa Rica's Liberty, improved by as much as 71.4 per cent.

OpenSignal measures network performance by using real-world mobile data from users, with the methodology published on its website. You can also check out the full report here.
