A new Starbucks is headed to a bustling road in the Midlands. Check out where it’s going

A ubiquitous, worldwide coffee chain is prepping a new location in the Midlands.

Starbucks is planning a new location in Camden along Highway 521, just north of Interstate 20. The location will be next door to a Popeye’s Lousiana Kitchen restaurant. Other businesses in the direct area include a Comfort Inn & Suites, a Holiday Inn Express, a McDonald’s and a Waffle House, among others.

The new Starbucks will be about 2 miles south of downtown Camden.

Local construction company Mimms Contracting shared a video April 8 on Instagram highlighting the new building where Starbucks will be. An opening date for the location has not been publicly announced.

While a number of coffee chains have popped up in the Midlands in the last couple years, Starbucks continues to be the leader among national coffee places in the Columbia market. There are more than 40 Starbucks shops across the greater Midlands, according to a store locator tool on the company’s website.

The company has been busy expanding locally in the last few years. A new location opened recently in the 1100 block of Dutch Fork Road in Irmo, near a new Aldi supermarket.

In 2022, a new Starbucks was opened at 356-A Longs Pond Road in Lexington, near Interstate 20. Also in 2022, Starbucks opened a shop at 2807 Rosewood Drive, in the Fifth and Sloan mixed-use development. And the company opened a new store last year in the 650 Lincoln development near Colonial Life Arena.

The Starbucks coming to Highway 521 in Camden is along a busy thoroughfare. About 15,800 cars per day travel down that stretch of 521, with more than 31,000 cars per day traversing Interstate 20 nearby, according to state Department of Transportation statistics.
