Starbucks Canada stores closing Monday for inclusion training
Canadians will have to go elsewhere for the caffeine fix on Monday afternoon.
On June 11, Starbucks Canada will be shutting 1,100 locations across the country for inclusiveness training at 2:30 p.m. local time.
The move follows the company’s U.S. stores, which shut down for inclusiveness training on May 29. All employees received training on unconscious bias after two black men were arrested at a Philadelphia Starbucks store. Employees called the police on them when they asked to use the washroom of the shop and were refused.
Michael Conway, president of Starbucks Canada, sent out a memo to stores informing them of the closure.
“This is only the second time in our history that we’ve taken such bold action,” Conway wrote in the memo. “The first was 10 years ago when we closed our stores to perfect our espresso. We’re closing our stores again now because we must never be complacent in our desire to be inclusive, to live our Mission and Values, and to create a culture of warmth and belonging every time.”

Signs are posted on Starbucks locations with the closure time. Stores will open again as usual the following day.
