'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' — with 14 deleted scenes! — has a home release date, new trailer

Finally, the chance to welcome some porgs into your home. Lucasfilm announced today that Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be available to own in a matter of weeks, with a digital release on March 13 and a Blu-ray release on March 27. Both versions will be available in 4K Ultra HD with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos immersive audio, a first for both Star Wars and Disney. Even more exciting is the abundance of bonus features, curated by writer-director Rian Johnson. The film comes with 14 (!) deleted scenes; a feature-length documentary about the creation of the film from Johnson’s perspective; a featurette about the mythology of the Force (which we’re expecting to be an extended version of this); breakdowns of three key scenes; footage of Andy Serkis doing his Snoke scenes pre-CG; and of course, the usual audio commentary. Watch a new trailer for the Blu-ray and digital release above.

Though it’s always a pleasure to see Serkis’s nonanimated acting and hear Johnson geek out about Star Wars lore, the most exciting prospect here is the unprecedented number of deleted scenes. The Force Awakens DVD had only seven deleted scenes, most of them very brief, and Rogue One had none (a major disappointment considering the extensive reshoots that took place on that film). In contrast, Johnson has been open about the number of scenes left on the cutting room floor, and has promised that at least two “big sequences” and “a lot of really substantial little scenes” will appear on the Blu-ray. One of these is Luke Skywalker’s third challenge for Rey during her Jedi training on Ahch-To, which was cut entirely. Another is a “fun, funny sequence” of Finn, Rose, and DJ on Snoke’s ship. Best of all, there will be more footage of the Caretakers, the nunlike aquatic creatures who developed a hilarious grudge against Rey.
