“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which takes place 30 years after the events in 1983’s “Return of the Jedi,” will usher in a new generation of characters, some of whom are aligned with the good Rebel Alliance, now called the Resistance, while others back the evil Empire, now called the First Order.

Here’s a quick guide to the returning characters as well as the new ones.

THE RESISTANCE

New characters:

Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. She’s introduced as a scavenger on the desert planet Jakku.

Finn, played by John Boyega. He was once a Stormtrooper for the First Order but has become a good guy. He is rumored to have the lightsaber that belonged to Luke Skywalker.

Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, who’s known as the best fighter pilot in the galaxy.

Returning characters:

Han Solo, played by Harrison Ford. He’s still the bad boy of the good guys. And he seems to have an affinity for Finn, who reminds him of himself.

Luke Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill. Various Internet sites indicate that he’s apparently living in isolation, and his location is being sought by both the Resistance and the First Order.

Gen. Leia Organa, played by Carrie Fisher, who has dropped the “Princess” in the new trilogy for a military title.

Admiral Ackbar, played by Tim Rose. He’s the one who said, “It’s a trap” in “Return of the Jedi.” And he supposedly warns the good guys again in this new series. He’s a former commander of the Rebel Alliance.

Chewbacca, the Wookiee from Kashyyyk, again played by Peter Mayhew.

C-3PO, with Anthony Daniels.

R2-D2, the sassy robot, with Kenny Baker inside.

IN THE MIDDLE

(As far as we know)

Maz Kanata, played by Lupita Nyong’o. She’s a pirate in the Han Solo mode and runs a bar where many of the characters go.

Lor San Tekka, played by Max von Sydow. He’s an elder on the planet of Jakku. He supposedly has lots of information, and possibly knows the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker.

THE FIRST ORDER

Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver. He’s the commander of the First Order and, like Darth Vader, has a strong connection to the Force.

Supreme Leader Snoke, played by Andy Serkis. He’s Ren’s master.

General Hux, played by Domhnall Gleeson. He’s the head of the First Order base Starkiller. Although part of the First Order, he has a rivalry with Kylo Ren.

Captain Phasma, played by Gwendoline Christie. Her name reportedly is derived from the 1979 horror film “Phantasm” and she supposedly wears chrome armor.
