The 'Star Wars' Director Search Continues Without Guillermo del Toro

When we last explored the question of who will direct part or all of the controversial new Star Wars trilogy from Disney, Guillermo del Toro was "probably" not directing it, based on comments he made that no one had "formally approached" him. Now, we know for sure that he's been approached, and that he's out — but that the search is on. Kevin Jagernauth at Indiewire's The Playlist reveals today that del Toro said he did get a call about the project but turned it down: "We got one phone call to my agent saying, 'Is Guillermo interested?' And basically I have so much stuff already of my own, and I'm pursuing stuff that I'm generating already..."

At least we now know that calls are going out in this process, and that "they" — presumably executives from Disney, which bought LucasFilm in October and tapped writers a month later — reached out to at least one pedigreed fantasy auteur. We can only imagine who else has said no. And, more excitingly, who might yet say yes. For now, we'll have to settle for del Toro's Pacific Rim.
