Hoping to save the "doomed" Fantastic Four franchise, Star Wars actor Ben Mendelsohn reveals that he would love to play the next movie's big villain.

While the series may currently be in limbo thanks to Josh Trank's disastrous reboot, it hasn't stopped Mendelsohn's hopes of one day playing Victor Von Doom's supervillain alias Doctor Doom.

Mendelsohn clearly has a knack for playing the bad guy, and his impressive evildoer CV includes John Daggett in The Dark Knight Rises and Orson Krennic in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Speaking to MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the 48-year-old said that he wants to one day slip on a metal mask and play the Fantastic Four's greatest foe.

"Doctor Doom is the greatest comic character of all time," gushed Mendelsohn. "The thing that's appealing about Victor is the damage and trauma, the loss of the family, the wrong done to him and then the takeover, the revenge, and then the protectiveness of Latveria wrapped in that Cold War vibe."

For those who managed to sit through it, you may remember that Toby Kebbell suited up to play Doom in Trank's Fant4stic.

Kebbell's version was one of the most criticised parts of an already maligned movie, but it doesn't look like that long-awaited sequel will be coming any time soon.

Since his inception in 1962, Doctor Doom has become arguably one of the biggest comic book villains of all time, and it just wouldn't be a Fantastic Four movie without him.

On our screens, Doom has been portrayed by Joseph Culp in 1994's unreleased Fantastic Four, Julian McMahon in the 2005 and 2007 movies, and Kebbel in the latest instalment.

With Fox firmly holding on to Reed Richards and co., don't expect Disney's MCU to do a family-friendly reboot either. However, there could be hope for Mendelsohn, with Fox circling a Doctor Doom solo movie.

When Fox or whoever finally decides to assemble the Fantastic Four again or give Doom his time to loom, Mendelsohn would certainly be a stellar choice to play the villainous Victor.
