Star Trek: Discovery is about to introduce a brand new officer with Shazad Latif taking on the role of Lt. Ash Tyler.

The actor has been spilling some tidbits about the show and is teasing that there might well be some big character deaths throughout the season.

"I think so, yeah. I mean, that's what most shows do now," he revealed to Digital Spy.

"You keep the audience on tenterhooks. You never know. You want to build these relationships with these characters, and it just makes it all the more heartbreaking when they go. I mean, yeah, I think you're never safe."

Shazad also let slip there might be a bit of a romance for his character and Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), admitting there's "chemistry" between the pair.

"There's definitely chemistry between them, and they're both going through some things. So they're trying to help each other find who they are.

"They could find some solace in each other. That's all I can say!"

Elsewhere, he revealed that when viewers meet his character it'll be in pretty mysterious circumstances.

"He's a very skilled security officer. He's a prisoner of war. That's how we meet him, with Jason Isaacs [playing Captain Lorca] and Rainn Wilson [playing Harry Mudd].

"They're three very different characters, and you don't really know why they're there. It's just a great episode."

Shazad was originally cast as a Klingon in the series, but when the role of Tyler came up he was asked to audition. He was pretty chuffed he landed the role - especially as he gets more of a lie in.

"I just jumped at the chance, really. And obviously there's less time with prosthetics, so you get a little bit more sleep! [Playing an alien] would have been a great thing to experience."

"I would have liked to have known what that's like, actually. But I'm happy with Tyler. I'm sure you'll enjoy him."

Star Trek: Discovery airs on CBS All Access in the US. Netflix streams the series in the UK.
