Woman faces charges after fight at central Las Vegas valley elementary school leads to stabbing

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A man was stabbed and a woman is in police custody Friday following a stabbing outside of a school in central Las Vegas.

According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, the stabbing was reported shortly before 11 a.m. and took place in the 1000 block of J Street, north of Washington Avenue. The stabbing occurred outside of Wendell Williams Elementary School.

According to the Clark County School District Police Department, two adults “with a child in common” were attending a kindergarten promotion ceremony at the school.

The two adults, a man and a woman, got into a verbal altercation inside the school before moving the altercation outside, where it became physical.

According to CCSDPD, there was pushing and shoving during the fight before the woman pulled out a knife from her purse and stabbed the man in the abdomen three times.

At that point, staff had already called 911 and put the school into a hard lockdown. Officers from both the CCSDPD and the LVMPD arrived shortly after.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and was later released as the injuries were non-life-threatening.

Police arrested the woman for assault with a deadly weapon, battery with a deadly weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, disturbance of school, and domestic battery.

Police did not release the name of the suspect.

In emails sent to Wendell Williams Elementary School families, Principal Cynthia Ireland said that CCSD police and Metro Police were on campus and, out of an abundance of caution, the school remained on lock down.

Ireland noted that all students were safe in their classrooms and there was no threat to students or staff. She noted there was no plans to dismiss students early. Due to the lockdown, the fifth grade promotion ceremony has been postponed until Monday, Ireland said.

“We’d like to remind parents that as we head into graduations, to please remember that we need to celebrate our children’s accomplishments so they leave their schools with only happy memories,” CCSDPD wrote in a release. “Please be mindful that the actions you take can ruin not only one of your child’s happiest days but every other family who’s gathered to celebrate their children.”
