St. Tammany Parish deputies lure escaped horse out of neighborhood with apples

ST. TAMMANY PARISH, La. (WGNO) — Deputies with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office were tasked with the job of luring in an escape artist Friday morning, April 26.

According to the sheriff’s office Facebook page, officers received a call reporting a horse was loose in a Mandeville neighborhood and that it was eating all of the freshly planted flowers in the resident’s yard.

Deputies Xavier Ramirez and Jonathan Coco arrived on the scene to “take the reigns” of the situation.

They said the efforts to lure the horse were made with the help of neighbors who provided deputies with apples, sugar cubes and corn to attract the animal.

Officers said the St. Tammany Parish Department of Animal Services got in contact with the horse’s owner, who voluntarily surrendered the animal due to them being unable to take of it and that it kept escaping.

According to deputies, the horse is in the custody of animal services and will remain there for medical care until it is rehomed.

Deputies say they want to remind the public how much of a responsibility it is to have an animal of such capacity and to do their research.
