St. Petersburg motorcyclist dies from injuries in Central Avenue crash, officers say

A St. Petersburg motorcyclist has died from injuries he suffered in a crash nine days earlier, the St. Petersburg Police Department said Wednesday.

At around 3:46 p.m. on March 12, Stephen Mathowsky, 49, was driving a gray Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycle westbound on Central Avenue, approaching the intersection with 20th Street, the agency said in a news release. Jeffery Early Johnson, 28, was driving east on Central Avenue in a silver Chevrolet Cobalt.

Police said both drivers had a green light as they approached the intersection.

Johnson made a left turn onto 20th Street and collided with Mathowsky, who was entering the intersection, according to the release.

Mathowsky was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg with serious injuries, officers said, and he died as a result of them Tuesday.
