Is it St. Louis or Saint Louis?

ST. LOUIS – It’s a question visitors and locals alike have: is the city spelled St. Louis or Saint Louis? According to Google Trends, people around the area have been asking that very question.

The city is named after Louis IX, who was the only French king to also be a saint, according to STLPR. His statue can be seen in front of the Art Museum in Forest Park.

Following the lead of where the city got its name, it could be easy to think it’s spelled Saint Louis. Which is correct in some cases.

In postal addresses, the official way to spell it is Saint Louis. This is due to the fact that St. is used as the abbreviation for street. There are also several websites and official documents or forms that prefer the use of Saint rather than St.

However, the city does the opposite and spells it St. Louis. Meanwhile, the county appears to spell it either way, varying from St. Louis to Saint Louis throughout their website and social platform. The Associated Press Stylebook, which is the grammar style for journalism, also uses St. Louis.

Other historic landmarks and attractions also differs on whether to use the shortened or longer name. Such as Saint Louis Zoo, Saint Louis Art Museum, or St. Louis Union Station.

It appears Missouri isn’t the only one who struggles with the spelling, either. St. Cloud, MN, also commonly interchanges the two names.

The debate has surfaced on several online platforms, including Reddit, Quora, and Twitter, with majority of users stating they use St. Louis.

In the end, there is no right or wrong way to spell the Gateway to the West, but pay attention to which one you use online.
