Is the St. Landry Parish Courthouse haunted?

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) — At the St Landry Parish courthouse, several occurrences that can only be described as “unexplainable” and even “unbelievable” have led to speculation that it may be the result of paranormal activity.

Parish President Jessie Bellard says even he has noticed the paranormal activity.

“It’s been a lot of activity over here, but the recent few days, I’m seeing myself,” said Bellard.

Bellard says he’s heard reports of paranormal activity for several years but has now seen it first-hand since renovations at the courthouse began; with most of the activity taking place in rooms that will soon be redone or are in the process of remodeling.

Activity includes pipes that have been intact since the 1930s suddenly breaking, out of commission elevators motors suddenly activating, and reports of staff hearing a judge’s gavel in the courtroom when the room is vacant. All of this activity is taking place in areas yet to be remodeled.

“Last week we had a flood up on 206, which is two floors above me now, and it flooded that room, the clerk of courts offices from one end to the other. No rhyme or reason of why it did it. We’ve got plumbers over here to come look at it, and they ran cameras through all the lines and nothing. There’s nothing that can happen. Nothing that made any sense,” said Bellard.

With an unexplainable flood, it became even more alarming when Bellard was made aware that the room was originally the location of the jail toilets before the parish jail was built; even hearing from others that the smell was identical.

“The third-floor jail, those inmates, they stuffed things down the toilet and the overflow the toilet on purpose. They do that across the street right now,” said Bellard.

With Bellard now witnessing these events, he and other witnesses now question what is really happening in the walls of the courthouse.

“You know it’s bad when the trustees says, ‘Mr. Jessie can we go back to jail.’ We don’t have an explanation yet as to why it did what it did. There’s nothing. So, we’re hoping to find out more, you know, but we haven’t,” Bellard explained.

As the search for answers continues, a team of paranormal investigators visited the courthouse and reported large amounts of activity, but there is no plan on how to deal with it.
