Abilene Christian High School begins new year with state-of-the-art building

A ribbon cutting Tuesday morning solidified a step in the future at St. John’s that boasts a student-led learning environment.

Instead of a teacher and classroom as is typical, lab facilitator, Lainey Alcorn told KTAB/KRBC how having the non-traditional structure will be more beneficial for students.

“It’s going to be teaching our students to think critically as elementary students. They get to come in and explore, and plan their projects, and then they’re going to reflect on them and share as well,” Alcorn explained.

The STEM-focused lab will introduce students to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in creative and innovative ways. The lab features state-of-the-art technology such as drones, a 3D printer, and hundreds of kits for building, circuitry, and more.

“Our students are going to be really equipped for the real world with all of these critical thinking skills that they’re going to learn in here,” promised Alcorn.

One student in the new lab told KTAB/KRBC, “I’m excited to try things I never have before.” Right next to her, another added, “I’m excited to print things on the 3D printer.”

The lab will be officially introduced into the elementary school’s curriculum next week.
