St. Cyril's Preschool and Kindergarten students get pizza for learning 50 states

Mar. 25—DANVILLE — Students at St. Cyril's Preschool and Kindergarten in Danville know learning is fun. Their recent focus on geography was rewarded Monday with pizzas delivered by firetruck.

Betsy Finn, kindergarten teacher at the school, said geography is important in her classroom. "Because we can't be good citizens if we don't know where things are," she said to her students Monday.

All of the kindergarteners in Finn's class learned to locate all 50 states on a map using a rug in their classroom.

Six year-old Nora Ellis demonstrated what she and her peers learned by singing a song and picking out the 50 states on the rug.

The students said learning the locations wasn't hard. They did so within two weeks, according to Finn.

As a reward for their hard work, a fire truck pulled up to the cafeteria to deliver lunch for the class's pizza party.

With wide eyes, the students had the chance to sit inside and explore the truck.

The kindergarteners' next focus is on naming all 50 states and capitals, Finn said. The class demonstrated the progress they've already made as their teacher quizzed them Monday.

They've also learned some fun facts about the states. Emma Ellison, 6, said her favorite fun fact had to do with Florida.

"Florida is a peninsula which is land surrounded by water on three sides and land on one," Ellison said.

Ellis's favorite fact was that the Liberty Bell is located in Pennsylvania.

The students at St. Cyril's were also excited to share that they could recall the preamble of the U.S. Constitution and knew the alphabet in both sign language and Spanish.
