Sri Lankan court orders dairy giant Fonterra to suspend sales of its milk products
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) -- A Sri Lankan judge has temporarily ordered New Zealand dairy giant Fonterra to stop selling its milk products or advertising them as safe.
The ruling, valid until Aug. 30, was issued Friday after the Sri Lankan Health Ministry said two batches of milk product showed traces of an agricultural chemical and ordered a recall.
The company's local office did not answer a call seeking comment.
Fonterra, the world's largest dairy exporter, announced last week that hundreds of tons of infant formula sold abroad could be tainted after tests found bacteria in whey protein concentrate that can cause botulism. The company later said it removed all supplies of potentially contaminated infant formula from the international market.
