Sri Chinmoy on True Happiness as a Sign of Spiritual Progress

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / September 26, 2017 / The modern world offers many luxuries, but genuine inner richness remains elusive for many people. When life's purpose is unknown, it is difficult to grow spiritually and achieve self-realization. Guru Sri Chinmoy taught on the advancement of the human spirit for over half a century. A core belief of his practice was that connection with one's soul is the only way to authentic bliss and meaning. On finding fulfillment, he emphasized that: "True happiness is not a complacent feeling. True happiness is the spontaneous feeling of joy that comes from knowing you are doing the right thing and leading a divine life."

Sri Chinmoy's spiritual practice harnesses meditation to unlock the power of the boundless spirit, enabling students to seek happiness and progress towards their true individual path. Meditation that quiets thoughts and stills emotions is the bridge between the inner world of the soul, and the outer, socially constructed world. And with the advent of modern medical technologies like functional magnetic resonance imaging, the neurological benefits of meditation are just beginning to be quantified. Forbes magazine reported that researchers link the ancient practice to increased thickness in areas of the brain related to learning and memory, improved focus, and reduced social anxiety. In 2014, a study from Johns Hopkins found that meditation had a similar affect for symptoms of depression on the brain as antidepressants.

Sri Chinmoy's belief in each individual's potential to transcend limits led to great accomplishments in athletics and the arts. He was a renowned sportsman, running 22 marathons and 5 ultramarathons shortly after he began teaching in America. To encourage his students to surpass physical limitations, he founded the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team in 1977, and organized the Self-Transcendence 3100-Mile Race in 1997, a New York City ultra-long distance race that is held to this day and called by the New York Times "the Mount Everest of ultramarathons". By strengthening the intuitive muscle of the heart and soul through meditation, Mr. Chinmoy wrote 1500 books, 22,000 songs and created 150,000 paintings. Research by the Harvard Business Review confirms that meditation contributes to enhanced creativity. The Review found that just 10-minutes of the practice allowed people to produce a wider range of ideas to support problem solving.

By focusing attention on the spiritual heart in the center of the chest, Mr. Chinmoy believed one could more readily achieve a deep meditation with the help of the soul. Once that internal voice is heard, one's personal destiny is illuminated. The spiritual leader's life and career testified to his conviction that humanity's progress is dependent on the individual's journey towards peace and purpose. Each person can use meditation to understand their unique contribution to the world and find their life's joy. Mr. Chinmoy taught: "Your special mission - which is the fulfilment of your divinity - is not outside you, but within you. Search within. Meditate within. You will discover your mission."

Sri Chinmoy was born in Shakpura, Bangladesh, in 1931. After studying meditation for 20 years in the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in South India, he moved to New York City in 1964 to bring his spiritual practice to the West. He devoted his life to guiding students to bridge the eternal soul with the contemporary world. Mr. Chinmoy was a spiritual leader to followers from over 60 countries, as well as a friend to world leaders and elite athletes. His teachings continue to flourish today through the Sri Chinmoy Centres, the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team, the Peace Run and the Oneness-Heart Tears and Smiles humanitarian aid program.
