Springfield rolls out new crisis plan for severe weather, other emergencies

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The City of Springfield is unveiling a new crisis plan to keep the community well informed and prepared in emergency scenarios.

City officials said the plan was developed using lessons learned from last year’s derecho, which wreaked havoc on Springfield’s power grid. The crisis highlighted the need for effective communication during such an emergency; since then, officials worked to create a robust crisis communication strategy that ensures timely and accurate information when people need it most.

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of every resident in Springfield,” Mayor Misty Buscher said in a press release. “A well-prepared community is a resilient community. Our Crisis Communications Plan is designed to provide clear guidance and support during times of
uncertainty, ensuring that everyone has the information they need to make informed decisions and stay safe.”

The new plan incorporates various channels like social media, public service announcements and mobile notifications to share important updates and instructions. In addition, the city has partnered with local radio stations to provide real-time updates and essential information during emergencies.

The radio partnership, officials said, will reach a broad audience across Springfield and the surrounding area. Information conveys across radio will include details on emergency procedures, shelter locations and other pertinent information.

“We’re proud to collaborate with our local radio stations to enhance our emergency communication capabilities,” said Haley Wilson, Communications Director for the City of Springfield. “By working together, we can ensure that our community remains informed and
prepared for any situation.”

People can stay informed by signing up for emergency alerts through the City of Springfield’s website or by following the city’s official social media accounts.
