Springdale couple arrested on elder abuse, manslaughter charges

SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — A Springdale couple is facing charges of elder abuse and manslaughter, according to a news release from the Springdale Police Department.

Gary Cannady, 45, and Sandy Cannady, 42, were arrested on Tuesday on manslaughter and endangering the welfare of an impaired person.

Springdale PD responded to an abuse report at Northwest Medical Center just after 7 p.m. on Monday, according to the release.

Once they arrived, they found Loretta Mulanex, 78, with numerous injuries and in a “state of extreme atrophy”, unable to move her arms and legs.

The release says Sandy, Mulanex’s daughter, called for medical assistance but when paramedics arrived, she tried to refuse to have her mother taken to the hospital. Sandy told investigators that Mulanex had been in that condition for at least three months.

Gary told SPD he knew of Mulanex’s condition and that she needed medical care but did not seek medical attention.

Both were booked into the Washington County Jail on an endangering the welfare of an impaired person charge.

Later Tuesday morning, Mulanex died and both were then charged with manslaughter. Mulanex’s body was sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy.

SPD says the investigation is ongoing.

Both were booked on a $150,000 bond and have court dates set for March 27.
