Fresh produce and flowers: Locals plan Livingston Farmers Market

PUTNAM TWP. — A pair of farms are teaming up to debut a new market near Pinckney this season.

Last year, Regina Hamlett of Hamlett Lavender Farm and more than a dozen other vendors organized booths at Schell Family Farm, 10055 Dexter-Pinckney Road in Putnam Township.

This year, they're launching a brand new Livingston Farmers Market at Schell Family Farm, large enough to accommodate more than 120 vendors. They hope to make it a destination for people who love fresh produce, farm-raised meats and poultry, flowers and local artisans.

The market will launch at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, April 6, during the farm's annual Easter Egg Hunt. The regular market season will run 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays from May-October, with regular homesteading talks at 11 a.m.

Hamlett, who makes lavender body products and baked goods at her Dexter Township farm, will be the market manager. Dea and Chris Schell are happy to play host.

The market is accepting applications from vendors, including farmers, homesteaders and crafters — and a small number of local businesses.

Hamlett expects around 30 vendors at the start of the season, but hopes to hover between 120 and 150 vendors once the concept gains momentum.

The name "Livingston Farmers Market," she said, makes it clear the market isn't just for Pinckney vendors.

Chris Schell, meanwhile, said visitors are welcome to visit the farm for u-pick throughout the growing season, from apples to tomatoes to corn to pumpkins.

"We have a lot of people come through our farm," he said. "While they're here, hopefully they can support these local farmers. We have a good location, plenty of space."

Special events, like a Halloween party, are also possible.
