Spring officially starts, cooler weather expected despite warmer outlook

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Winter officially ends as Portland enters the spring season at 8:06 p.m. Tuesday.

Why such a specific time? The spring equinox officially starts when the sun’s rays are directly over the equator. This year, that happened on March 19 at 8:06 p.m. That’s where the northern and southern hemisphere sees the same amount of light — also known as the equinox.

Winter ended on a warm note this year. Record-breaking temperatures for Portland were seen, but spring is typically more mild and wet in the Pacific Northwest. On average, Portland sees an average daytime in the upper 50s for the start of spring. Temperatures gradually begin to warm and skies slowly dry over the next three months. As summer approaches, Portland’s new average daytime high typically sits in the mid 70s.

This year, the Climate Prediction Center is expected temperatures to sit slightly warmer than normal over the western half of the country. If this pans out, that would continue the temperature trend we’ve seen over the last week or two in Portland. Precipitation is also expected to sit on lower end of the spectrum. That could have the potential to increase the drought situation and wildfire activity later in the summer months if projected trend continue.

For now, Portland’s first few days of spring will be near average, but much cooler than the last week. Rain showers will return to the region later this week as temperatures fall back into the mid 50s through the weekend.
