What will you do for spring break 2024?

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — Spring break has sprung in San Angelo, leaving several students wondering how to spend it. Whether you’re a school kid trying to capitalize on the time off or a parent trying to keep the family entertained, here are a few things you can do this spring break in our little slice of West Texas.

Take a trip to the park

When you think of San Angelo, an abundance of parks probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. The city is home to just under 40 parks, though, meaning that there’s plenty of room for your next family outing.

Every San Angelo park, from smallest to largest

If you’re looking for more than just your average park experience, you’re in luck. The town has multiple skate parks, such as the one at 1405 Edmund Blvd., and plans for another one are already in the works. Two splash pad projects slated for construction at Kirby Park and Unidad Park are also in the fundraising stage, turning the two parks into potential hotspots for next year’s spring break.

Make it a movie night (or movie day)

San Angelo is home to two movie theaters: Cinemark Tinseltown USA, located at 4425 Sherwood Way, and Icon Cinema, located at 2020 N. Bryant Blvd. While they have competing times and prices, the movie selection for this spring break is perfect for any cinema connoisseur.

For those looking to return to the sandy, war-torn planet of Arrakis, “Dune: Part Two” has been out since March 1 and with widespread critical acclaim. The film scored a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, an 8.9 out of 10 on IMDb and a 79% on Metacritic, indicating that fans of the sci-fi adventure novels-turned-movies are in for a treat.

For those looking to appeal to a younger audience, “Kung Fu Panda 4” kicked its way into the box office on March 8 for some high-flying animated action. Universal Pictures’ “Migration” movie is still playing at Cinemark, for families wanting duck-themed PG fun.

See why we’re Texas’ visual arts capital

San Angelo prides itself on being the official Visual Arts Capital of Texas, a title Gov. Greg Abbott officially bestowed on the town in 2021. As such, there are very few places in town where a mural, sculpture, or other art installation can’t be seen.

There are several art galleries one can choose to explore, including Pop of Color, Art in Uncommon Places, the Chicken Farm Art Center and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. Paintbrush Alley, located in the alleyway behind the Firestone Complete Auto Care on 38 W. Concho Ave., is also a popular hotspot for art enthusiasts thanks to its open-air approach to displaying its works.

However, one of the most widespread forms of art is the flock of sheep statues that residents and tourists can find all across the city. Dubbed the “Sheep Spectacular,” shortened to “Sheeptacular,” by the Downtown San Angelo organization, these statues pay homage to the town’s origins as the wool capital of the world. A map showing where to find the wooly wonders can be found on Downtown San Angelo’s webpage for the attractions (but we won’t judge if you just want to see them all in the online gallery).

What else?

If all else fails, websites run by organizations such as Downtown San Angelo and Discover San Angelo display a comprehensive list of events being put on in the community. These online sources are a great way to stay in the know about upcoming festivities and other events, both during spring break and beyond.
