Spotswood hit with another lawsuit, this time for allegedly not paying its bills

SPOTSWOOD – The hits just keep on coming.

Already facing a pile of lawsuits from police officers, a former borough administrator and a resident, Spotswood has been sued again – this time by a management consulting firm alleging the borough has not paid an outstanding $26,222.50 bill.

Government Strategy Group and its CEO Kenneth DeRoberts filed suit Wednesday in Middlesex County Superior Court alleging that the borough has not paid for a variety of services performed in 2023.

Borough Attorney Victoria Flynn had no comment on the lawsuit because the borough has not been served with the court papers.

Government Strategy Group, headquartered in Wall, signed a contract with the borough on March 8, 2023 to provide financial management and oversight services, recruit a new chief financial officer and borough administrator and other services.

The contract, according to the lawsuit, called for the consulting firm to be paid $19,650 per month for a minimum of three months for financial services, $29,800 for the recruitment services plus $3,500 for hiring a business administrator and $3,950 per month for other services.

On May 8, 2023, the firm sent Spotswood a bill for $19,495 for services from March 24 to April 23, 2023, a second bill for $1,815 was sent June 1 for the next month of services and a third bill was sent on June 7 for $4,912.50 for services from May 24 to June 1, according to the lawsuit.

Natasha Turchan, who also serves as chief financial officer in Bound Brook, was hired as Spotswood's chief financial officer on April 3, 2023.

Brandon Umba, a former assemblyman from Burlington County, was hired as borough administrator on May 15, 2023.

But since then, the firm, which has performed work for other Central Jersey municipalities including Edison, Perth Amboy, Plainfield and Somerville, has not received any money from Spotswood, the lawsuit says.

Besides demanding the $26,222.50, the lawsuit is asking for legal expenses and interest.
