Jonesville boys cross country wins regional title, the program's first since 2002

JACKSON — Hillsdale County Division 3 cross country teams traveled to Ella Sharp Park to take part in the MHSAA LP 23-3 Regional championship. Jonesville boys cross country would walk away with a regional title. Two Hillsdale runners would earn All-Region honors and individual qualification for the MHSAA state finals.

The Comets won the regional championship with a final score of 60. The Comets defeated both Jackson Lumen Christi (76 points) and Hanover-Horton (84 points) to earn the regional title. It was their first title as a program since 2002.

Their regional championship qualifies the entire Comet team for the state finals held at Michigan International Speedway. Senior Gavin VanKampen led the Comets with a fourth-place finish and a time of 16:58. Freshman Caleb Blonde had a 17:20 time and took eighth overall.

Nicholas Fowler took 11th with a time of 17:29. Freshman Collin Fucile took 18th with a time of 17:48. Senior David Fowler took 19th with a time of 17:50. Senior Jacob Norman took 34th with a time of 18:38. Junior Zachery Childress took 50th with a time of 19:27.

"We have tough young men here at Jonesville," said Jonesville coach Jake Snyder. "They were focused on the goal today and achieved it. Everybody knew what they had to do and executed. They ran relentlessly."

The individual regional title was claimed by Isaiah Dinverno of Jackson Lumen Christi with a time of 16:27. Hillsdale senior Nolan Grant took second place and All-Region with a time of 16:51. He qualifies for the MHSAA LP state championship.

In addition to Nolan Grant, Hillsdale junior Chloe Stalhood qualified for the state finals with her ninth-place finish at regionals with a time of 21:08. Stalhood finished more than three minutes ahead of every other county girls cross country runner.

The girls cross country individual D3 regional champion was junior Emmry Ross of Onsted, who won with a 18:51 final time.

For the Hornet boys cross country team, freshman Logan Youngman finished just outside state qualification with a 17th place finish and a time of 17:44. Junior Dominick Coke (18:31) took 30th, senior Aiden Monroe (18:45) took 38th, junior Miles Brown (19:58) took 60th, senior Cassius Muszynski (20:31) took 72nd and sophomore Collin Mullaly (21:56) took 90th.

For the Hornet girls cross country team, sophomore Abby Amburgey took 48th with a time of 25:08. Junior Cailey VanZant (25:43) took 58th, freshman Claire Flannery (25:51) took 61st, freshman Kiely Kroa (26:17) took 67th, sophomore Ava Evans (27:10) took 71st and senior Maeve Mackie (29:51) took 81st overall.

For the Comet girls cross country team, Kiera Knight led Jonesville with a 44th finish and a time of 24:49. Senior Zoey Udzik (25:03) took 46th, freshman Julia Mandrelle (25:15) took 50th, senior Maria Mandrelle (26:02) took 63rd, senior Hallie James (26:05) took 65th, junior Karly Page (26:15) took 66th and senior Morgan Baker (26:41) took 69th overall.

The MHSAA LP state finals will be held on Saturday, Nov. 4 at the MIS speedway. Gates open at 7:30 a.m. Start times for Division 3 girls and boys cross country events are10:10 and 11:30 a.m. respectively.
