Sports complex, Va. settle suit for nearly $1M

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A company that sold memberships for a sports complex that it never built will pay nearly $1 million to settle a lawsuit filed by the state.

Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli says that along with the $900,000 settlement, SportsQuest LLC will pay $50,000 in civil penalties and $45,800 for attorney's fees and costs. Any proceeds from the settlement will be used to reimburse consumers.

The lawsuit alleged that SportsQuest violated the Virginia Health Spa Act by failing to open within a year of starting the pre-sale of membership contracts for its planned complex in Midlothian. The suit also claimed the company illegally failed to pay refunds to consumers within 30 days of closing a separate facility.

The settlement must be approved by the Chesterfield County Circuit Court.
