Sports centre shuts as company enters liquidation

A village sports centre has had to shut after its management company announced it would be going into liquidation.

Melbourn Sports Centre, on the grounds of Melbourn Village College, in Cambridgeshire, first opened in 1991.

Staff announced the closure with "shock and sadness", in a statement on the centre's website.

Melbourn Village College - a secondary school - said the news was "disappointing" and it was exploring alternatives for the future of the centre and facilities.

In the statement on its website, Melbourn Sports Centre said: "It has been a privilege and a pleasure to work with and teach you and your families."

The management company said in a statement: "Unfortunately Be Active Melbourn had to cease trading and will be going into liquidation shortly."

A spokesperson for the college said it understood the news would be disappointing to centre users and the local community.

"Melbourn Village College and The Cam Academy Trust are now committed to exploring alternative solutions for the future of the sports centre and facilities," the spokesperson added.
