Spirit Lake Tribal Council initiates lockdown due to potentially armed, dangerous man in Fort Totten

Apr. 4—SPIRIT LAKE — The Spirit Lake Tribal Council initiated a lockdown of its tribal offices, schools and businesses on Thursday, April 4, after learning of a potentially armed and dangerous individual.

The Spirit Lake Tribe posted a statement on social media late Thursday morning that said the tribal council and Fort Totten Police Department are seeking assistance in locating Kolby McKay, a Fort Totten resident.

A reward has been offered for any information leading to the apprehension of McKay, the statement said. Those with information can contact the police department at 701-766-4231.

The Herald contacted the police department Thursday evening to confirm whether McKay was still at large. The police department declined to comment and directed the Herald to the district Bureau of Indian Affairs office. The Herald left two voicemails for the district office. Neither was returned by mid-morning Friday, April 5.

The Herald also contacted the tribal council to confirm whether they were still on lockdown Friday morning, and was directed to the chairperson, who did not answer two phone calls and had a full voicemail box.
