'Such a special day': Calhoun County families welcome Leap Day babies

BATTLE CREAK — Leap Day was a busy one at Bronson BirthPlace as four Calhoun County families welcomed new babies Thursday morning.

At 3:10 a.m., Margaret Teller and Nate Haughey welcomed their new baby girl, Laila Elizabeth Haughey, weighing in at 7 pounds, 13.6 ounces and measuring 20 inches long.

At 4:45 a.m., Renee and Jacob Yaratch welcomed their new baby boy, Emmit Jacob Yaratch, weighing in at 7 pounds, 2 ounces and measuring 18.75 inches long.

At 8:10 a.m., Rae and Austin Keller welcomed their new baby boy, Liam Jay Pierce Keller, weighing in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces and measuring 22 inches long.

Last, but certainly not least, at 10:06 a.m., Sydnie Weller and Brandon Settles welcomed their new baby girl, Haidyn Jae Settles, weighing in at 8 pounds, 2 ounces and measuring 22 inches long.

“It is a joy to be able to be a part of such a special day in the lives of these families,” Amanda Cole, charge nurse at the Bronson BirthPlace in Battle Creek, said in a news release. “Each member of the BirthPlace team takes great pride in providing the best care possible to each and every patient. We truly do have the best job in the world!”

Bronson Battle Creek was recently named one of nine hospitals in the state to receive the Economic Alliance for Michigan 2023 Maternity Care Excellence Award for demonstrating "excellence in maternity care and delivery outcomes."

Annually, more than 700 babies are born at the Bronson BirthPlace in Battle Creek. So far this year, more than 125 babies have been born there.
