Spain's Sanchez offers alternative option to seek deal with Podemos

MADRID, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Spain's Socialist leader Pedro Sanchez on Tuesday said there were too many disagreements with far-left Unidas Podemos to have a coalition government but he offered an alternative option that would see them agree on policies and give non-cabinet positions to Podemos.

Sanchez said that would not correspond to Podemos' demand for a coalition government but the Socialists would not either govern alone.

He also offered to set up independent mechanisms to verify that any deal with Podemos on what policies to implement would be respected.

Sanchez said he was still aiming to seek a deal and there was no objective reason to hold a repeat election. (Reporting by Belen Carreno, Jesus Aguado, Joan Faus Editing by Ingrid Melander)
